The pilgrims gathered at Bambou & Basilic, a Michelin three-star restaurant in Le Puy, to celebrate their pilgrimage. The restaurant is in the old city, a 30-minute walk from the International Centre. 

Angelique was our server, a patient and kind woman who afforded us excellent service and a friendly smile always. The food is described as fusion food that resides between the modernity and traditions of Le Puy. It was a real treat with insights into French cooking and service. Below, Angelique takes the count on who wants which meal: bamboo or basilic. 



1. Amuse Bouche

The "amuse bouche" course literally means the food that amuses your mouth. In other words, it is an appetizer or aperitif. It was served with champagne (some with a touch of chestnut or apricot flavoring) and some colorful and tasty morsels on tiny pieces of bread (left) or a bit of cold lentil soup (right).

2. Entrees

The entree is the first course of the meal. While Americans call the main dish their entree, the French call their entree the course that helps you "enter" the meal. We had a choice of four entrees.

3. Plat -- the main course

The main course or plat, is a meat, fish or vegetable dish in France. We had four choices.

My First Visitor -- Tracy




My friend, Tracy, came to Le Puy recently to spend a week with me. She is my first visitor from the USA. We spent our time together talking, eating, driving the French countryside, and just enjoying each other's company. Here we are picnicking in a public park on one of our drives.





Salami, cheese and fresh baguettes. What more could you want? 






We also went out to several restaurants in Le Puy--and I highly recommend all of them.

Here we are at L'Ame des Poetes, a vegetarian nouvelle cuisine place in Le Puy. Eluiza from the Centre joined us in this delicious repast.

There was supposed to be a Thai restaurant, but we couldn't find it. So, we went to the Paris-Saigon restaurant and had French-Vietnamese fusion dishes.


At Marco Polo, we had Italian pasta, the best-cooked pasta I've had in France so far besides mine. (They tend to over-cook the pasta and it falls apart.) Tracy had pesto, and I had an anchovy and olive sauce. 

On her first night in town, Tracy joined participants in one of the groups visiting the Centre at L'Ecu D'Or.  Fantastic meal!! Fantastic people to share it with.





One of the good things about the restaurants in LePuy is that they try to use local meats and produce. Most of the food raised is also organic and it definitely does NOT have genetically-modified products as GMOs are banned in Europe. The food is real, which is the main reason it is so tasty. Well, French cooking and its sauces help a lot, too!

At Le Chamarlenc, Tracy had boeuf bourguignon and I had veal in sauce. Delicious! This was one of our favorite restaurants--and Tracy's last night in Le Puy.



One day we just stayed at the International Centre and cooked a dejeuner of rice and mixed vegetables. Dîner included chicken, salad, and more vegetables.  Sorry there are no photos. We were too busy cooking.



Lac Bouchet


We went to Lac Bouchet and trekked twice around the crater lake that was formed by an ancient volcano. We also had tea and cappuccino at the restaurant on the lake. A lovely afternoon on a beautiful day.

















The restaurant at the lake has a full selection of meals, drinks, and ice cream. There's also a lodge for overnight stays where the air is fresh. A forest surrounds the lake.

The Cathedral of Le Puy 


We walked up the stairs to the Notre Dame Cathedral, which is the highest point in the city of Le Puy. This church was built during the 11-13th centuries. Its stone is basalt and comes from the volcanic rock that surrounds this whole area.




Here is a look at the steps leading to the Cathedral. Fortunately, we were already halfway up the steps in nearby Place St. Maurice (left of the steps) where I had parked the car in order to avoid having to make the climb.

The Healing Stone. According to legend, a sick woman received the order to climb the mount of the Cathedral When she reached the top, she noticed a flat stone where she lay down and fell asleep. Around her gathered "a multitude of angels and saints..." When she awoke, she was healed. Today, pilgrims continue to confide their sufferings to the Virgin Mary by regularly laying the stone.

Vichy
We went to Vichy, which is famous for its healing waters. We wanted to take a hot springs bath. We discovered, however, that the places to partake the healing waters were far more elaborate than we expected. You must make an appointment and then stay for treatments over a period of time, like a month. Instead, we found several fountains that provided water for free. 

At the fountains we brought back 6 bottles of Celestins water for Eluiza, who is still recovering from a fractured shoulder. You can either drink the water and/or apply it to your skin. Eluiza did both and reported that it relieved some of her pain! So our trip was purposeful even though it wasn't what we expected.

Vichy dates back to the time of Julius Caesar, who had a spa built there 2,000 years ago. Emperor Napoleon III (1808-73)--and his entourage of several thousand--made Vichy his primary summer resort. Many of the city's buildings were erected at this time and this also made the city unique for its elegance. From the 1880s to 1940s, Vichy was like a high-class Las Vegas with casinos, high-end restaurants and, of course, brothels. It is still a wealthy area.

According to Nathaniel Altman, author of The Ultimate Guide to Taking the Waters (2000), the Vichy spa hosts 12 springs, of which 6 are used for drinking. There are cold springs (Celestin, Parc and Lucas) and warm springs (Hôpital, Chomel and Grande Grille). There are also 2 well-equipped thermal establishments which feature mud baths and colonic irrigation as cures for rheumatism and liver problems. Altman describes the qualities of the Vichy water:

"The source of Vichy Celestins, the most popular water used for drinking, emerges at 21ºC (71ºF) through strata of aragonite rock, formed by water-borne mineral deposits over millions of years. Layers of calcium carbonate have eroded over the centuries, contributing to Vichy's unique natural carbonation and mineralization. Vichy's low level of carbonation and high mineralization give it a taste that many associate with Alka-Seltzer. Vichy water has been used to treat stomach disorders, normalize biliary secretions, alleviate the symptoms of gastroesophagal reflux, provide relief from food and drug allergies, and reduce the symptoms of colitis."   Nathaniel Altman







The Thermes de Vichy uses modern hydrotherapy methods using the waters of Vichy.

These volcanic-basalt tubs were used at the Thermes de Vichy in the 19th century for water treatments until 1902.  


The Centre Thermal des Domes spa is an example of Neo-Moorish architecture. The hall features frescoes by the symbolist Alphonse Osbert. Unfortunately, we ran out of time to go inside. The Centre was built in 1816-17 and reconstructed around 1874.











Vichy has a World War I memorial, which is quite a common site in France. The war's total number of military and civilian casualties was more than 41 million. There were over 18 million deaths and 23 million wounded, ranking it among the deadliest conflicts in human history. Many people, including the students at Oxford University in England, made a pledge to never wage war again. Unfortunately, after 100 years, that pledge still has never been realized.




Vichy is also famous for its role in World War II. It was seat of power in the unoccupied "Free Zone" of France;  the northern part (including Paris) was occupied by the Nazis. World War I hero, Marshal Phillippe Pétain was appointed by Albert François Lebrun, the last president of the Third Republic (1870-1940). 

Pétain was known for outstanding military leadership in World War I, particularly during the Battle of Verdun (Feb 21 - Dec 18, 1916), which France finally won. He was sometimes nicknamed "The Lion of Verdun."

During World War II, Pétain ordered the French Government's military leaders to sign an armistice with Germany on June 22, 1940.  He also established an authoritarian regime that reversed many liberal policies like the independence of women and a free press. His government advocated central planning, tight government control over the economy, anti-Semitism, and anti-Bolshevism. His government was also regarded as a symbol of collaboration with the Nazis; it was suspended in late 1944 when the Allies liberated France. After the war, Pétain was tried and convicted of treason and sentenced to death. Because he was a war hero, he spent the rest of his life in prison until he died in 1951.

Many Thanks to St. Joseph!


This is a family we met at a hospital emergency room. We sat together for at least 90 minutes and formed a little, temporary community where we talked, laughed, had some fun while we waited to see the doctor.

Eluiza and I had been hosting two sisters from New Zealand for three days. We took them to all the high points around town and they enthusiastically enjoyed them. 

Things had been going very well--until their last afternoon with us. We were on our way back home after enjoying lunch at a restaurant and visiting the Kitchen and the  scenographic history of the Sisters of St. Joseph. We had planned to hang out at the house, go to Mass, and have a simple evening meal when we returned. Unfortunately, Eluiza tripped on a huge crack in the sidewalk and fell off the curb and onto her shoulder! She could not move her arm and the pain was excruciating.

Marie and Colleen, who were walking a few meters ahead of us, heard the fall and ran toward us. Fortunately, Colleen is a nurse, so once she got Eluiza up again, she walked with her. After going down the steep hill, the two of them stopped at a small park at the bottom. Eluiza was feeling whoozy. Actually, she was in shock and had turned white. They eventually went to a pharmacy across the street where the pharmacist took Eluiza's blood pressure and recommended that she go to the hospital emergency center right away.

Meanwhile, I walked home to get the car so I could take Eluiza to the hospital. Marie came with me and then stayed at the Centre to pray to St. Joseph that everything would work out. He was already helping us get through this incident and he would proved to be with us many times more.

We made it to the hospital in a matter of minutes, and Eluiza continued to be in terrible pain. She sat down and asked me to go to the check-in window to register her. As I waited for a couple people in front of me, I practiced what I would say in French because I had to get it right. Fortunately, when it was Eluiza's turn, she came up to the window just in time and explained what had happened to her. (I was relieved!) 

We waited another 30 minutes before they called her. They gave her a sling for her arm and sent her to Radiology, which was a long, winding trip around the hospital. The x-ray technician examined the results and mentioned that she had fractured her shoulder. A fracture is apparently better than a break, so we thanked St. Joseph.

While we waited, which turned out to be another 90 minutes, we began interacting with the people around us. A family was there with their little girl who had a bee sting in her leg and a huge bubble on her hand, the result of her swinging on a metal bar. When I talked to Eluiza and Colleen in English, the little girl's eyes brightened because she recognized the language. Perhaps she was recognizing that English was a living language that people actually spoke and not just a subject she took in school. She wanted to engage me. She told me that she was 11 years old and in her fourth year of learning English. She also shared stories about her love of sports, which included soccer, basketball, and track and field. Her very extroverted father also told us that she was a born athlete.  

Whenever I attempted to speak French and would goof up, the whole family would correct me--in unison, which was very funny to me. I eventually told them I was a writer and asked if I could take a picture of them for my blog. They said yes. I rose from my chair to position myself for the shot. When I turned around, they were all posing (see photo above), which also made me laugh because it was so unexpected.

While we waited for the doctor, we also met another patient, a truck driver who needed some emergency attention. He was accompanied by his friend, a tour bus driver. The truck driver told us he had been hauling sheep milk for cheese over the past 30 years. He seemed to take a shine to Colleen and spoke in French to her even though she didn't have a clue about what he was saying. She just responded to him with smiles. Apparently, he just needed someone to listen to him, and he saw that she was good at that. Here is their photo. 

A young man in colorful pants that looked like a cross between Spiderman and Batman walked past us a couple times and attracted everyone's attention. I told the group that I hoped to get pants like his for Christmas, and they all laughed.

After we had been sitting in the waiting room for a long while, Eluiza suddenly got the idea--even in her pain--to ask the group if anyone knew the way to the St. Etienne train station. We were going to take the sisters there early the next day so they could connect to a train that would take them to the Lyon airport. The truck driver and the tour bus driver both knew the way and gave us directions. That was a lucky break, too, and we thanked St. Joseph.

Finally, the doctor called Eluiza. She took one look at him, became alarmed, and asked me to come with her. He looked a little like Frankenstein, was very business-like, and spoke very fast. Although the ER didn't seem that busy, he seemed to be in a hurry. Finally, he gave Eluiza a prescription for pain and a special sling for her shoulder. We went to the pharmacy in town just minutes before it closed, and the pharmacist, who was very nice, showed us how to put on this complicated sling. 

By this time we had missed Mass and Eluiza was in no condition to go anyway. We went back to the house and had a light dinner of soup and sandwiches, which the sisters helped me prepare. All had gone well under the circumstances, and we all thanked St. Joseph.

Almost two weeks have gone by and Eluiza is still in pain, although her shoulder is healing. A big part of her distress is that the Centre was about to go into its busy season, and she wouldn't be able to work. However, she didn't have to worry because St. Joseph would take care of that, too. A young Indian sister who is visiting Lyon for a while, will take Eluiza's place and help out at the Centre.

Eluiza also discovered that the French health care system provides a nurse to come to a patient's home to bathe her, cut her finger nails and attend to any particular needs. Ingrid is Eluiza's nurse, and she is very gentle and kind. Ingrid also showed Eluisa how to set up her bed with pillows so that her shoulder could be comfortable. Eluiza had been sleeping in a lazy boy chair for a week because it was the only place where she could sleep--even though it wasn't much. Sleeping in her bed with this new set-up has helped her tremendously. Only four more weeks until this ordeal is over!  

When Ingrid isn't there I am Eluiza's nurse. I wrap the sling around her, tie up her hair in a pony tail, open jars, peel back the tops of yogurt cups, cut her meat, cook our meals, put on her seat belt, and perform various other small things she can't do with only one hand. It has been an interesting lesson in what it takes to be a caregiver even at this minor level and to realize the important job that nurses do for their patients. 

So even though tragedy had struck Eluiza, St. Joseph was with her and taking care of her throughout this ordeal. Good thing Sr. Marie was back at the house praying to him that afternoon!
